Evolution of woodland since 1950
The forest of the Massif Central is the single largest forest in France. For more than 50 years, it has attracted the lions' share of investment funds for replanting in white woods and redwoods (pines, firs, spruces, Douglas firs).

The increase of forest area has been particularly important in Aveyron: + 300% in Aveyron during the period 1950/1999 (+ 35% in France during the same period).
The Aveyron has got now 264 000 ha of forested area (30% of Aveyron) and produces more than 1 million m3 of wood (Current annual gross production) which 70% hardwood and 30% conifers. The local wood resource is important but still relatively little used by Aveyron's companies of second transformation sourcing most often on the national and international markets (North wood and exotic wood in particular).

Leading figures in the industry testify
|
 |
 |
André PERIE - Manager, Périé Frères - (sawmill)
"The Aveyron forest is continuing its policy of replanting, particularly on Lévézou and the Monts de Lacaune vith evergreens. The reputation of the initial transformation sector is built on its careful selection and know how. Often cited, Aveyron is a reference for the added value transformation of local reconstituted woods. Butting up, veneering, and pressurised laminating are processes which the locals understrand and carry out with originality and talent." |

Jean-Rémy BERGOUHNE - President and Chief Executive Officer, Finadorm Group - (wooden chalets, bedding and furnitures for early childhood)
"Wood is a noble material which enhances its setting and architecture. From Périgord to the Camargue, from Aubrac to the Côte Vermeil, our holiday villages "Havitat" respect the local traditions and blend in with their environment to look authentic. It was in the Aveyron, with its mosaic of landscapes, that I found my inspiration. Always respecting the local heritage, Fabre 2012 exports its savoir-faire throughout France, its overseas dependencies and to Europe." |

Daniel DRUILHET - Manager Druilhet SARL - (framework)
"What is important to me, these are the values of Aveyron’s craft. My struggle is to gain recognition for these crafts. Through my job as carpenter and my status as President of the Chambre de Métiers et de l’Artisanat(Chamber of Trades and Crafts), I work for what is one of the major pillars of the Aveyron’s economy : 6300 craftsmen who employ 20,000 people in Aveyron. Stayed in Aveyron by choice, I created my business with my old companions. It is a great department with a very good mentality, beautiful landscapes, high-end crafts that we do not always find elsewhere." |

Christian CASTES - President Castes Industry - (joinery)
"From Villefranche, I fell into wood chips when I was young. The West Aveyron and joinery naturally occupy my life. My roots are here. From my home territory, I now sell the fruit of my work on the southern half of France. The quality and expertise of Aveyronnais are dear to me." |

Eric BARES - President Lignivalys - (siding parquets)
"Like any self-respecting Aveyronnais, Thierry SEBASTIA had to promote the qualities of the department since I agreed to invest in the basin, despite the warnings of my friends some of which are sure that Aveyron is the end of the world. Finally, I don’t feel disorientated. The Vosges and the basin of Decazeville have in common this mixture of rurality and industry restructuring(textile crisis in the Vosges), which gives residents a particular attitude to situations. I do not feel at the end of the world. It is the quality of the welcome that convinced me to invest in the basin. Throughout our setting-up, we felt surrounded." |
